MEETING MINUTES

Special Meeting

December 1, 2003

A special meeting of the Mason County Central Schools Board of Education was held at the Central Business Office for the purpose of discussing school budget issues.

1] CALL TO ORDER

President Al Deering called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

2] ROLL CALL

Members Present: Karen Bieniek, Jim Dittmer, Al Deering, Randy Saxton, Gena Nelson (7:35)

Members Absent: Nancy Knizacky, Norm Letsinger

Others Present: Chuck Sandro, Kris Courtland-Willick, Carla Mayer, Jack Murchie, Jeff Mount, Sherryl Martin, Trent Naumcheff

Also Present: Mark Steigenga (Ludington Daily News), Jennie Coakley (TV 7 & 4), Scott Briggs, Sue Andersen, Jessica Danielson, Brooks Johnson, Laura Nowsch

3] CONSENT APPROVAL OF AGENDA

The agenda was approved by consent

4] *CALENDAR APPROVAL

A. A motion was made by Jim Dittmer, seconded by Randy Saxton to approve the minutes of the November 17, 2003 regular board meeting. Motion carried 4 – 0.

5] DELEGATIONS, COMMUNICATIONS AND EXPRESSIONS FROM THE PUBLIC, 30 Minutes maximum

None

6] INFORMATIONAL REPORTS

A. State Funding Update – Kris Courtland-Willick

Ms. Willick gave an update of state funding, and the district fund equity balance.

7] *ACTION ITEMS

A. Recommendation for Reduction in Certified Staff – Mr. Sandro

Based on the directive from the board finance committee, the state funding outlook, and contractual obligations, Mr. Sandro offered a resolution for staffing reductions.

A motion was made by Mr. Saxton, seconded by Mr. Dittmer, to approve the resolution as presented. Following a brief discussion, the motion carried 5 – 0.

8] ADDITIONAL EXPRESSIONS FROM THE PUBLIC, 20 Minutes maximum

Ms. Johnson and Ms. Nowsch addressed the board concerning the proposed reductions.

9] EXECUTIVE SESSION

None

10] *ADJOURNMENT

A motion was made by Mr. Saxton, seconded by Ms. Bieniek, to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried 5 – 0.

The meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
